Job & Career Accelerator by Learning Express (trial)

With the current state of the economy, I thought it might be worthwhile to look into this addition to Learning Express. I had a quick overview from the database rep this morning and it looked very promising.

I realize there is some overlap with our new Brainfuse product JobNow from Youth Services (including resume help, Micorosoft help, and some tests, but competition is always good!

Please feel free to comment!

  1. Positives: It’s a one-stop shop for:
    job & career information
    up-to-date job searches
    resume help
    career tips and assessments
directly links to Learning Express tests for various different careers and occupations
    incorporates various job sites/listings (http://www.simplyhired.com/, http://www.monster.com, etc.)

    Negatives:
    Doesn’t have a typing program 
    Costs money
Is dependent upon institutions to update their job listings
    Offers only Chronological Resume examples

  3. Hi JoJo. Thanks for trying the site. You clicked on the early link for Brainfuse, but this won't work. Please see further below on the e-mail you received, and that will give you access information and the link.

    Thanks!

  4. I am posting the following comment made by another ACLD staff member:

Hi, All. This is Meredith P. in Outreach. I logged onto Career Accelerator by Learning Express using one of the trial accounts and found the whole thing very involved. I took the career aptitude test, which was simple enough (although it had no examples whatsoever of library-related tasks). My results returned 35 possible careers for which I might have an aptitude. This seemed like a ridiculously high number to me. Still, I chose one of those 35 careers that seemed most apt and began exploring job postings. The whole process struck me as quite complex. Lots to read. Time-consuming. I can see desperate, unemployed patrons with low skill levels getting frustrated pretty fast. This is a product for the college educated and people with oodles of time on their hands. Not a criticism. Just an observation. I think a fair number of our patrons will need a lot more hand-holding than this product provides.
